The Value of Grades

Grades encourage students to work harder at school.

I think it is vital that children work hard and aim to be their best in school for many reasons. But do grades encourage us students to work harder in school?

Like graded worksheets, tests galvanize children to work harder, study more and at the end of the day, gain more knowledge. Grades encourage students to absorb more information and pay more attention than they otherwise would. Many think that tests set students up for failure and demotivation, but to me it's about the final result and having that great feeling come over you when you see those green ticks on your paper!

The process of studying for exams can be quite stressful. From staying up late to not understanding material—it’s overwhelming. However, the grading system teaches us that in life if we want a certain result, we have to work hard and reach towards it.

Most of us are dismal when we don't get good grades, but lower grades push us to improve. They help us understand where we went wrong and how we can develop better results in time.

I saw an example of this in my life a while ago when we were assigned a presentation. Most of the presentations were quite average. Later on, our teacher told us she would give us a day to make changes and that our presentations would be graded. The next day we presented our homework once again. The assignments were considerably more professional and polished.

To conclude, I agree with the statement, “Grades encourage students to work harder at school”. There are many sides to the opinion, but I think grades help us work towards our future and enhance our educational life.

Personally, I relish coming home and showing my parents my grades because it's most rewarding.
