Stray dogs: A Social Responsibility?

Dogs which have no owners are classified as stray dogs or urban dogs. Some dogs are unwanted by their owners, thus heartlessly abandoned onto the street. This is a fairly typical occurrence.

Though some residents of a vicinity may find street dogs to be a nuisance as they fear that they may be attacked by the dogs during their morning walk or chased while they are on their two-wheeler on their way to work - stray dogs are actually not as dangerous as they seem!

Dogs are by nature territorial. Whether it is humans or animals, dogs are particularly protective of their owners and area. Dogs have a natural instinct to distinguish between bad and good human beings, which helps them keep undesired outsiders out of their territories. However, they are mostly friendly and because of this they are also known as man's best friend since the dawn of time.

Unfortunately, some dogs are not the friendliest and do not trust people right away because of how they have been treated in the past, but then when they do get familiar with their surroundings and the people around them, they pose no threat to the families in the community. Street dogs are particularly astute, they instinctively recognize and remember familiar people and are usually loving and welcoming to those residents who are kind, gentle and take care of them.

Alternatively, they are wary and stay out of the way of people that have a mean streak in them. They also sense if a passerby is fearful and may, as a game, bark and chase those that exhibit fear but not out of unkindness.

Though there are already stringent laws about mistreatment and relocation of stray dogs, dogs on the street are treated very badly and at times even killed. Many people are scared of animals and that’s okay; but it gives them no right to harm an animal especially when the animal isn’t harming them.

Therefore, if people of a locality are kind and look after their street dog population by showing affection, vaccinating and spraying them, then the dogs reciprocate with love and by providing a high level of security to the locality. Consequently, stray dogs are a social responsibility that create a mutually beneficial relationship.
