Formula One racing is amongst the most followed global sports. It is the pinnacle of 4-wheel track racing. It is unrivaled in terms of technology, prestige, history, and skill. The level of competition is intense, and the window of opportunity is narrow. The top 20 drivers globally get to compete in the sport, each vying for the crown of the F1 World Champion. Each driver is a member of a well-organized team, and each team consists of two drivers. They are supported by a large team of engineers, technicians, strategists, and support staff at each circuit and back at the facility that contributes to the success of the driver & team. Each team vies for the Constructors' championship. It is thus called Formula 1 as it takes all these elements to come together to deliver a successful Drivers' World Championship and Constructors' Championship.
Two drivers went head to head for the driver's world championship in 2021, reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton and protagonist Max Verstappen. It made for a thrilling and action-packed season, of keen competition of the experienced Lewis and eager and supremely talented Max. The 22 race long season was about the highs and lows between the two racers. At various points of the season, they both held the lead in the championship. The thrilling finale in Abu Dhabi was set up by a string of victories by Hamilton that made both drivers go into this last race equal on championship points. Max still held the lead in the championship given his 9 wins to Lewis’s 8. It was all to play for. The eventful race which ended with a controversial decision by the organizers to race the last lap is a contested decision but it was a decision worthy of an eventful and exciting season. The championship and fans deserved the last racing lap to be under racing conditions to decide the Drivers' World Championship. At the end of which Max Verstappen was crowned Drivers' World
Champion for the first time while Mercedes got the Constructors' Championship for the combination of the results brought by 7 time world champion Lewis Hamilton and his teammate Valteri Bottas in 2021.
Even though the Drivers' World Championship was decided on the last lap of the last race of a long season, the season offered wheel-to-wheel racing between these two closely matched drivers. Other highlights included the first win for Esteban Ocon for Alpine Racing, a win for Daniel Ricciardo with his teammate Lando Norris in the second position.
Season 2022 will miss long-time formula 1 driver and world champion, Kimi Raikkonen, along with his teammate Antonio Giovinazzi who retired at the end of 2021 and heralds the return of Alex Albon who did not find a signing for the 2021 season. 2022 will also be the first time that F1 will have a Chinese driver, Guanyu Zhou. Truly the 2021 season has set up expectations for the fans and followers for what 2022 will have in store.
