The long awaited PS5 was finally revealed by Sony on June 11th, 2020. Although Sony has still yet to set a release date of the official console, they released a trailer that showed off their new futuristic looking console. The fresh console leaves behind the all black theme of the ps4 and switches to a tall white body with accents of blue and black.
So far Sony has claimed that the console will be available in two variations. The standard edition with a Blu-ray drive and a thinner digital edition that will depend purely on streaming and downloading games from the store. Sony has added a solid-state drive inside the console instead of the PS4’s hard drive making loading times and the console overall run a lot faster. Sony not only changed their hard drives but also completely switched their CPU and GPU. The new PS5 will have a Zen 2 based AMD chip along with an AMD graphics card and 16B of GDDR6 memory. Another feature of interest to gamers is the addition of backwards compatibility which will allow players to play their PS4 games on the PS5. Although this was later introduced in the lifespan of the PS4 many gamers were happy that the feature will be available at launch.
Besides the console Sony unveiled a VR headset and the DualSense 5 controller which will include additional features such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and a built-in microphone. To conclude the reveal, Sony showed off the latest games that will release on the new generation of consoles such as a Horizon Zero Dawn sequel, Resident Evil 8, a new Spider-Man entry and more. Sony plans to launch the console during the holiday season of 2020 between October and December so gamers could buy it for Christmas.
Overall, the console shows huge potential and an enormous leap toward gaming on a powerful machine that can handle heavy games. So far it seems as if PC gaming has yet to take over the industry as Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Sony’s PlayStation 5 show huge promise.
