What is Nepotism and how will it destroy many industries?
When the news of Sushant Singh Rajput's suicide broke out, it shook the country and shocked everyone. There was no suicide note left behind, but former friends and directors told the truth about why he took his life. This truth being that Suhant wasn't given roles in any movies because he was a self-made actor, and even though most of his films were successes, he was banned from every major production company like Dharma, YRF, Salman Khan, etc. This meant that he could only make a living by starring in TV series.
While Sushant was struggling in Bollywood, actors like Arjun Kapoor and Tiger Shroff have been getting alot of offers even though their acting skills are questionable and most of their movies are panned by critics. Yet their access to opportunities is a consequence of their last names. They have parents and godfathers who have worked in the industry and have contacts within Bollywood that are obliged to accept star-kids. They are the flag-bearers of nepotism.
After Sushants death, audiences became more serious about nepotism and blamed all the star-kids and big-shot Bollywood producers like Karan Johar for his death. That is nepotism. The Bollywood industry won't promote self-made actors even though they are very talented. Instead, Bollywood will heavily promote the movies starring iconic star-kids in them. An example of an actor suffering the consequences of nepotism is Ayushamnn Kurrana, a definite made actor, with critically acclaimed films. Kurrana was also discriminated by Bollywood because he isn't a star kid, but he has been praised for his unique acting skills. Conversely, while Student of the Year 2 was heavily promoted and made 98 crores in the box office, the movie was panned by critics and audiences. SOTY 2 was promoted more due to star kids like Tiger Shroff and Ananya Pandey staring in it. Another example is this is Chhichhore and Gullyboy. Both movies received positive reviews, both received a lot of money in the box-office with 230 crores each. Even though Chhichhore stood out as the best movie of the year, at the awards ceremonies Gullyboy took home all the big awards, and Chhichore was left forgotten because the lead in the movie wasn't a star kid.
We have to understand 2 things on why Nepotism is still prevalent:
1. Big producers
These producers only see money and they will take the star kids. Why? Because their parents or godfather have earned big money for the industry. Examples are Arjun Kapoor, of whose 10 out of 12 movies became flops, and was heavily criticized for his poor acting skills. Yet, he still gets offers in leads because his father is Booney Kapoor, a famous producer who is worth $5 million.
2. The audience
The audience can also be blamed for the spread of nepotism. Audiences tend to only watch movies with our favourite actors and actresses who are frequently star kids. We only go watch movies that have huge action scenes in them, and then later we say that the movie was terrible. This is the problem with us as an audience, we can't accept talented actors like Nawazudin Siwdiqui, Kangana Raunat, Pankaj Tripathi because they don't have famous parents. The problem is amplified either because Bollywood doesn't promote them enough, or we don't accept their talent because of their looks.
The best way to stop nepotism is by boycotting a product. If we as an audience reduce watching films starring star kids and only watch movies starring self made actors, then nepotism is likely to decrease. We have a duty to help the self made actors by watching more of their films than nepotist films.
Nepotism is everywhere, in your office, in the movie industry, and in your school. Either in large amounts of partiality or small. But the Bollywood industry carries a large amount of partiality towards the star kids, and thus will result in less of the new skilled talent. If Bollywood continues nepotism, then the quality of their films will go down and audiences will eventually boycott their films. The industry will face severe competition from other industries and production companies who may accept newcomers, and thus draw audiences inl. To conclude, I say: let's take a step against nepotism by boycotting nepotist products and films, and spend our time and money on actual talent.
