GTA 5 crashes Epic Games servers

From News18.com

The success of Epic Games and Fortnite has allowed the company to give away free games to users since December 2018. Although it started off with some small titles like What Remains of Edith Finch, there were some hidden gems offered for free like Watchdogs, and Subnautica. On May 14th many gamers waited in anticipation for the next game to be free on the store. When the countdown for release struck zero players around the world were filled with excitement and surprise when the world’s second-most sold game of all time, GTA 5, was released to millions of players for free.

Although GTA 5 released in 2013 the game has a huge fan base that preaches it for its unique story and open-world gameplay. It was clear to Rockstar Games, the creators of GTA 5, that the hype around their 7-year-old game still existed as millions of gamers simultaneously logged on to claim their game for free. Furthermore, the game was offering the premium edition with in-game bonuses for free as well incentivizing experienced players to link their accounts and claim the rewards. Naturally, this led to the Epic Games servers to crash as users experienced error codes that would prevent them from logging in the launcher. Epic was quick to respond and tweeted saying they were experiencing high traffic and were working at scale trying to accommodate all players on their servers.

Finally, on May 15 they tweeted saying that they had fixed the issue and most gamers should be able to log on. Although the Epic Games servers were now online the Rockstar Games servers required to run the game were struggling with this sudden burst in traffic. Furthermore, GTA 5’s reputation for unstable servers frustrated many gamers as they would wait on endless loading screens only to be greeted by a message saying it was unable to connect.

The problem seemed to be fixed a few days later. A new leak suggests that Epic Games has an exciting month planned as they are expected to release games such as Borderlands-The Hansome Collection, and Ark Survival Evolved in the coming weeks. All three of these games are some of the most popular in the world. If the leak is true many players are expected to return to the Epic Games store once again.
