1. Scream (1996)
“A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorised by a new killer, who targets the girl and her friends by using horror films as part of a deadly game.”
The 1996 slasher flick that single-handedly revived the entire horror genre is a cult classic, and has resulted in three movie sequels, along with a hit tv show, while simultaneously influencing multiple movies made after its release. It’s easy to see why the obsession is still strong over 2 decades later. Scream was satirical and gimmicky, making fun of the typical horror movie clichés, but somehow still managed to be sharp and chilling, and resonated with generations of angsty teenagers.
Scream grabs your attention in the chilling opening scene with Drew Barrymore and doesn’t let go all the way to the grand finale, where Ghostface is revealed - arguably the most iconic reveal in horror.
2. Hocus Pocus (1993)
“A curious youngster moves to Salem, where he struggles to fit in before awakening a trio of diabolical witches that were executed in the 17th century.”
Easily the least scary horror movie ever made, Hocus Pocus may be a kid’s movie, but that doesn’t stop people of ‘all ages from indulging in this hilariously entertaining film. Despite performing poorly at the box office upon its initial release, the movie has gone on to become a cultural phenomenon and a spooky season staple.
Perhaps it’s the New England aesthetic or the reminder that Halloween is meant to be fun, Hocus Pocus is endlessly watchable.
Just like a plastic skeleton, the movie takes something that is dark and dangerous and transforms it into something silly and entertaining.
3. Happy Death Day (2017)
“A college student must relive the day of her murder over and over again, in a loop that will end only when she discovers her killer's identity.”
The 2017 indie-horror production is a throwback to the punchy teen slasher movies of the 90’s and early 2000’s. Funny and quippy, whilst remaining interesting and bold, Happy Death Day is a grossly underrated movie. The protagonist is bratty and selfish, but somehow manages to garner sympathy as the story progresses and you find yourself rooting for her through every scene. Teaming up with a sweet but total stranger, she must find a way to expose the killer’s identity before she is killed once and for all. The Groundhog Day style provides a refreshing twist to a seemingly simple tale of murder (that it is until the killer is revealed).
