A COVID Christmas

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, but everywhere you go, it seems the pandemic isn’t over yet, and we’re all starting to fret, that the cases will only grow.

As we reach the end of yet another year, it can feel a bit disheartening to hear about all the safety restrictions being placed upon our merriment. With the rise of yet another variant of this dreaded virus, officials across the globe are reminding us that this certainly is not the time to be lowering our guard. And they’re right- which unfortunately for us, doesn’t make it any less frustrating.

Whether you were hoping to visit family overseas, celebrate the season with all of your friends, or even if you just wanted a nice, quiet, covid-free Christmas at home, it seems like none of us are getting exactly what we wished for this holiday season. But that shouldn’t stop us from making the most of the holidays.

For instance, while it may not be exactly as you envisioned, there are a ton of fun holiday activities that are completely social-distancing friendly:

  1. Have a video call with friends and family you haven’t seen in a while. Though it may not be quite as nice as getting to see them in person, it’s still a great opportunity to connect. It’s easy to get lonely when you’re all cooped up, so it’s definitely worthwhile to see some smiling faces to get you in the holiday spirit. You could even have a themed online party. The internet has made our vast planet a lot smaller, so take advantage of it!!

  2. Try out a new hobby. While it may seem a little silly, the holidays often give us a bit more time to sit around- so why not use it to do something you’ve always wanted to? Write that book you’ve been putting off for ages! Take an online cooking class, or join a club! There’s no limit to what you can do if you put your mind to it- and there’s no time like the present.

  3. Write your new year’s resolutions. Sure it’s a little early, but the new year is fast approaching, so why not have a head start? It doesn’t have to be anything too grand or ambitious- though it most certainly can if you want it to. Something as simple as trying out a new recipe once a week, or spending 5 minutes on gratitude each day, could be a good place to start. Setting goals for ourselves can be really helpful when we’re feeling a bit stagnant in our lives. It gives us something to look forward to for the year ahead, and a new and improved version of ourselves to strive to become. And don’t forget to write it down! Studies show that we’re a lot more likely to achieve a goal if we write it down- so grab some paper and a pen, and get going!

Irrespective of whether or not you decide to do anything listed above, or if you just want to be an absolute grinch- let’s try to end this year with gratitude. Try to take a moment before the end of this year to reflect on all the good times you had, because even if they were few and far between, I guarantee that they were still there. This year has undeniably been exceedingly difficult for all of us, but we’re still here, and that’s something to be grateful for.
