The Rollercoaster Might be Over After All

The 2020 presidential election held on November 7th was one of the most unpredictable elections ever to be seen. Millions of Americans were unsure what the results would bring - if their country was going to sink even lower or if they could finally have hope after four gruesome years.

In 2016, the presidential elections commenced for the 45th time, and one of America’s most famous and colourful billionaires was the Republican candidate. Donald J. Trump was a businessman and television personality who ran against Hillary Clinton, an experienced politician who had served as the Senator of New York and Secretary of State for a combined 12 years. Surprisingly Trump won the elections and shocked the country, forcing its citizens to adapt to the new normal, which was a stark contrast to the way of life the US had grown accustomed to.

As a former businessman, Trump often prioritised the economy over the welfare of the citizens. He somehow managed to convince millions of Americans to believe what he claimed was the truth. When he said science is wrong, people believed him. When he labelled CNN and other news coverage as ‘fake news’, people believed him. From the constant name calling to his denial of his own racism, to the disrespect towards women, the man with no previous political experience, has managed to destroy American lives. In the past four years he has successfully managed to tear down his predecessor’s achievements. He stopped Obama-care, which was beneficial to millions of American citizens. He removed the rights of illegal children to temporarily live in America, put them in inhumane conditions, and often referred to them as criminals. His campaign has always had one consistent catchphrase - ‘Make America Great Again’. Truth be told, it was great before he ran and could have been even greater if the Democrats had won in 2016.

Over the past year, Trump has been carefree about the Coronavirus and went as far as to call it a hoax for the first three months, refusing to believe scientists. He often proclaimed that science was wrong, leading the citizens of America to follow in his beliefs and blatantly disregard human safety, causing the United States to be one of the highest numbers of COVID-19 cases around the world.

However Joe Biden, a man who has had over half a century of political experience, has finally given American hope once again. Now that Biden has been elected as the 46th President, the situation seems to have taken a turn for the better. He has promised to get a vaccine to every American free of cost and will put the health of the people before trying to reform the economy. As he stated, he does not see red or blue states, he only sees the United States.
