Guess who's back, back again...
The coronavirus hit the sporting world hard. With social distancing and lockdowns at the
forefront of the world’s defence against the virus, the suspension of the world’s sporting leagues was inevitable. Financially, this had a great impact with sports clubs and leagues left struggling for survival due to the lack of revenue. Furthermore, it left a void in the world of entertainment too and people around the world could no longer watch their favourite teams compete.
That seems to be coming to an end though. The world of football is back. The Bundesliga has returned and it has brought back joy into the world of sports fans all around the world. This also signals the return of the other major European football leagues with La Liga, the Premier League and the Serie A set to return on the 11th, 17th and 20th of June respectively.
It’s not just football either, Formula 1 too has revealed plans to start the season on 5th July and hopes to carry out a minimum of 15 races for the 2020 season. Meanwhile, the NBA is targeting a return by 31st July. After a tumultuous period of uncertainty and worry, the world of sport is making a return. Having said that, most sports will first return behind closed doors and spectators will have to wait before being able to support their favourite athletes in person.
With safety being top priority and the long term effects of the pandemic yet to be seen, the world of sport may be entering new era as we plunge into the unknown. For now though, this revival provides hope and shows that there really is a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel. This resurgence brings a smile to the faces of spectators worldwide and also helps to sustain the world of sport with several different leagues and organizations at risk of going under.
For now though, all eyes are on the Bundesliga. The success it finds as a major sporting league in facing the trials and tribulations that the virus has to offer will ultimately serve as the prime indicator as to whether the world of sport is ready for a return. With the league having gotten off to a flying start and several countries seemingly past the peak of the virus, things look promising for the world of sport. While these are trying times and nothing is certain, if adequate safety measures are in place it seems inevitable that the world of sport will land on its feet and get going once more.
