Crisis averted

On the 9th March around 7 PM, the missile, BrahMos was accidentally fired from an Indian air base during routine maintenance and inspection check. It landed 124 kms inside Pakistani territory at a place called Mian Channu. Although no one was hurt in the accident, India has regretted the technical malfunction misfire of its missile. Once launched, the missile cannot be aborted and flies at almost three times the speed of the sound. Defense minister Rajnath Singh on March 15th said “A missile was unfortunately accidentally launched on March 9. The incident occurred during a routine inspection. We came to know later that it had landed in Pakistan. A formal high-level inquiry has been ordered. The inquiry would soon determine the exact cause of this accident,” Rajnath Singh had informed the Parliament. According to Pakistan, the missile flew more than 100 km inside their airspace, at an altitude of 40,000 feet before it landed. There was no warhead on the missile so it did not detonate. Pakistan called for an investigation into the incident, which it said could have endangered civilian lives and passenger flights. Pakistan has warned India "to be mindful of the unpleasant consequences of such negligence and take effective measures to avoid the recurrence of such violations in future". The inquiry to look into the misfire incident of the missile has pointed towards 'human error'. The officer was in-charge of the mobile command post of the missile system when the firing happened during a Command Air Staff Inspection (CASI) at the home base. Disaster was fortunately averted, thanks to good luck and measured reactions by both of the parties.
